The IACSP SEA Regional Office was invited by the UN Security Council Counter Terrorism Committee to attend the security roundtable meet in New York. The Global Counter-Terrorism Research Network, NY University in collaboration with the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate ins of the relevant security Council counter-terrorism resolutions, in particularly focusing on resolutions 2129 (2013), 2178 (2014), and 2354 (2017).
The workshop included a panel of experts from leading think tanks and academic institutions of the GRN, will allow the Committee, CTED and the research community to analyse and discuss related emerging issues, trends and developments. The meeting and subsequent discussions was aimed at identifying, highlighting and to build on research gaps with a view to pinpointing priority areas of work with respect to the implementations of the resolution.
The workshop focused on emerging issues, trends and developments in terrorism and counter-terrorism. Discussions focused on exploring the impacts of current trends on policies and interest of States and institutions as well as identifying research gaps and enhance analytic capacity to better address these trends which had been identified as follows:
- Returning and Relocating Foreign Fighters
- Protection of Soft Targets
- Countering Violent Extremism
